Some extra information…

N

Cold Hardy and Drought Tolerant Plant Selection

Not all drought tolerant plants are cold hardy enough to make it in gardens here in the Vail Valley, and not all cold hardy plants are drought tolerant enough to survive in our arid climate. We carefully select plant pallets for each project that are both beautiful and resilient, ensuring that your plants will not only survive, but thrive for years to come.

N

Turf Replacement

As anyone who has a traditional lawn and pays the water bill for it knows, bluegrass uses a LOT of water. Why not reduce that bill and the maintenance your lawn requires by installing a waterwise lawn? By planting drought tolerant native grass, clover or other hardy low growing plants, we can keep your landscape beautiful as well as make it water efficient. Bonus, waterwise lawns require fewer mows and fertilizer applications, further reducing maintenance costs.

N

Soil Preparation and Amendments

Xeriscapes require much different soil conditions than traditional landscapes. Most waterwise perennials and shrubs hate the rich and loamy soils of traditional gardens. We work with your existing native soils, adding gravels and other amendments when necessary to create the perfect and unique conditions for your xeriscape to thrive.

N

Pollinator Friendly Gardens

Waterwise landscapes can be just as beneficial for our native pollinators as they are for us. Native bees, butterflies, and moths all often enjoy the same plants and even soil conditions that are part of xeriscapes. If you want to make your home a safe haven for native pollinators we’re excited to help.

N

Rock and Crevice Gardens

Rock and Crevice Gardens are quickly gaining popularity and for good reason. A well made rock garden can be one of the most efficient ways to maximize the water efficiency of your landscape. Rock and Crevice gardens also add depth, dimension, and complexity to a landscape. Whether highly structured for a clean modern aesthetic, or built to mimic natural spaces, we can work with you to design the unique and interesting rock garden you’ve been dreaming of.

N

Reduced Maintenance

While no landscape is entirely maintenance free, the low organic matter in soils, the reduced water use, and the application of mulches all help to curb the growth of weeds and aggressive plants in waterwise landscapes.

N

Native Plant Gardens

Native plants are naturally suited to low water landscapes, since they’ve evolved to grow with only the moisture nature provides. Not only are they hardy and well adapted, they are also vital to the health of our local ecosystems by supporting pollinators and wildlife. There is no better way to bring the best parts of our mountain ecosystems home than by planting native plants in your landscape.

More about Xeriscaping

Unfortunately, the image that comes to most people’s minds when they think of the term ‘xeriscape’ is one of vast expenses of barren gravel with a sad shrub or three thrown in. Terms like ‘waterwise landscapes’ or even ‘Coloradoscapes’ are being more widely used to convey the truth that Xeriscape is, in fact, so much more than just replacing lawn with gravel. Whatever term we use, landscapes that incorporate designs and plant material better suited to the arid and semi arid climates we live in in the Eagle Valley are becoming not only desirable, but in some neighborhoods and HOAs, a requirement.  That can be a good thing!! Xeriscape, when done properly, can not only save you money by reducing your water bill, but can also help native pollinators, help keep our streams and rivers cleaner, reduce use of chemicals, as well as look amazing!

Projects in the Valley

In 2024,  Gore Range was fortunate enough to work with the folks at the Eagle River Coalition and Riverwalk, as well as other local non-profit organizations, to design and install a water wise demonstration garden on the south east corner of the main Edwards roundabout on Hwy 6. This project highlights three options for xeric lawn plantings as well as shrub and perennial gardens that showcase not only drought tolerant plants but also a wide range of wonderful Colorado natives.  Check it out in person or visit the Eagle River Fund website to see some wonderful before and after photos as well as to learn more about how the community came together to make this project happen!
